Oh how the tables do turn. The British press; bastions of truth, purveyors of wisdom, the moral highground in a sea of lies and deceit. And Wallys, every last one of them.
Often the England national team need no help in derailing their pursuit of glory but the press are never far away, willing to lend a helping hand whenever they threaten to acheive anything.
After England cantered to qualification, manager Fabio Capello was
deluged with plaudits from the tabloids and broadsheets alike. Now just 4 weeks away from the big kick off in South Africa the press decide that now is the time to attempt an undermining operation on the Three Lions and their Italian leader.
As Capello unveiled his preliminary 30 man squad, it was revealed that certain players who the press had been sure would be included, were not. To counteract the egg on their faces, in spiteful retribution, they targeted Capello's involvement in the Capello Index; an index that rates player performance 2 hours after they have played and in which Capello gave plenty of input to.
Column inch after column inch was devoted to portraying Capello as greedy, misguided and a traitor to the cause. Capello was forced into an apologetic rethink of the launch.
The public however have not responded as the Fleet Street hacks would have hoped, instead they have thrown their support behind the Italian. Evidently this is one World Cup where the fans want nothing to do with press smear campaigns.
